Book Recommendations:

• Mahdi , Kamil. Oil and Oil Policy in Iraq: Past and Present (to be released Dec. 8, 2009)

Covering events in chronological order, Kamil Mahdi shows how the oil industry has helped shape Iraq's domestic political economy and international relations from the time of the early oil concessions, the nationalization of the industry, through to American invasion and occupation.

• Arato, Andrew. Constitution Making Under Occupation: The Politics of Imposed Revolution in Iraq (2009)
Arato compares the drafting of the Iraqi constitution to similar, externally imposed constitutional revolutions by the United States, especially in Japan and Germany. Arato highlights the difficulty of exporting democracy to a country that opposes all such foreign designs and fundamentally disagrees on matters of political identity.

• Dyer, Gwynne. After Iraq: Anarchy and Renewal in the Middle East (2008)

Dyer argues that the Middle East is about to change fundamentally, and everything is now up for grabs: regimes, ethnic pecking orders within states, even national borders themselves are liable to change without notice. After Iraq is essential reading for anyone wanting an informed historical perspective on the future of one of the most important and volatile regions in the world.

• Tripp, Charles. The History of Iraq (2007 edition)

Tripp is a long-time Iraq specialist and this book is a chronological narrative of Iraq’s history until mid-2002, when Saddam Hussein was facing increasing pressure from the United States and war seemed likely. Book Review (2003)

• Al-Ali , Nadje Sadig. Iraqi Women: Untold Stories From 1948 to the Present (2007)

Nadje al-Ali challenges the myths and misconceptions which have dominated debates about Iraqi women, bringing a much needed gender perspective to bear on a central political issue of our time.
