Genocide, Terrorism, and the Rule of Law

John Shattuck, former U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic and Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, will
speak at the University of Washington School of Law Friday, February 17, 2006 at 6 p.m. The lecture, titled “Genocide, Terrorism and The Rule of Law” is free and open to the public.

Shattuck’s career in international human rights includes working to end the war in Bosnia; negotiating the Dayton Peace Agreement; establishing the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda; restoring a democratically-elected government to Haiti; administering U.S. assistance to new and emerging democracies; and raising the profile of human rights in U.S. foreign policy after the end of the Cold War. For this work, he received an International Human Rights Award from the United Nations Association of Boston in 1998. In 2000, Shattuck also received the Ambassador’s Award from the American Bar Association Central and East European Law Initiative.

Shattuck is also the author of Freedom on Fire: Human Rights Wars and America’s Response (Harvard University Press, 2003). He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.
