Event Information
Join YPIN for an exclusive film screening of “Africa’s Lost Eden,” with a post-event discussion. “Africa’s Lost Eden” is a National Geographic film that takes viewers on a journey to Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique - a place that used to be called "where Noah left his ark", before 15 years of civil war destroyed the ecosystem and nearly wiped out the animal population. The film follows the efforts to restore the wildlife sanctuary by building up the animal population in order to restore the park to its former glory.
The Gorongosa Restoration Project is a bold development project led by philanthropist Greg Carr and his foundation. The Carr Foundation has committed $40 million dollars over 30 years to protect and restore the park’s ecosystem, and to help develop an eco-tourism industry in the communities surrounding the park. By reintroducing animal species (elephants, hippos and other bulk grazers) to the land, creating jobs within the park, funding schools and health clinics and training local farmers, the Carr Foundation (in its partnership with the government of Mozambique) has embarked on an ambitious restoration effort. For more information, watch Greg Carr on CBS’s 60 Minutes at http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/10/24/60minutes/main4543667.shtml.
Wendy Johnson, Director of Health Alliance International, will join us for our post-event discussion and Q&A.
