Fellows Program

The World Affairs Council Fellows Program gives an exclusive group of current and future Puget Sound business and community leaders access to high-caliber international experts and enables them to develop contacts with their local counterparts. The program gives Fellows a deeper understanding of the international issues facing our world, nation, and state.

Highlight of Benefits

  • Internationally-recognized speakers
  • Discussion about current world affairs
  • Opportunity to establish business contacts
  • Limited class size

Format
Based on an academic year from September to June, the Fellows program includes a 10-month series of monthly breakfasts in downtown Seattle. Discussions examine pertinent international issues affecting our world in a small group setting and cover topics such as U.S. leadership in foreign affairs, global economic interdependence, and sustainable third world development. Each seminar includes a formal presentation by the speaker, followed by in-depth group discussion designed to stimulate exchange.

Program
Discussions examine pertinent international issues affecting our world today. Examples of broad topics include the following: US foreign relations, global economic interdependence, nuclear responsibility, sustainable third world development, and post-cold war foreign policy. International authorities in their field will lead the discussions.

Responsibilities
Fellows prepare for discussions through advance readings and are expected to participate in at least eighty percent of the sessions.

Nominations
Each summer, the World Affairs Council selects 25 Fellows from nominations submitted by sponsoring organizations, corporate members, Fellows program alumni, Council members, and interested individuals. Selection is based on current and future leadership in the community, the candidate’s background in international affairs, and ability to contribute to discussions. To nominate an individual, please contact World Affairs Council President Ian Moncaster at (206) 441-5910 or email imoncaster@world-affairs.org. Self nominations are welcome.

Sponsorship
Funding for the Fellows program is a partnership between a sponsor (a company, an organization, or an individual), which provides $1,300 (tax deductible under IRS guidelines), and the individual Fellow, who personally contributes $200. The sponsor’s contribution supports the year-long programming, and the individual contribution defrays the costs for the monthly breakfasts, venue, and mailings. Fellows may also self-fund their participation. Limited scholarships might be available.
