Winners of the 2005 World Citizen Essay Contest were honored June 16, 2005 at Benaroya Hall, following a talk by Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Executive Director of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative.

The winners were selected from a pool of over 220 students representing public and private schools throughout the Pacific Northwest. This was the sixth year the World Affairs Council has sponsored the contest.

As an essay prompt, participants had been asked to outline the actions they would take in the international community if they were appointed U.S. Secretary of State. The finalists' essays covered such issues as enforcing nuclear non-proliferation, advancing peace through education, fighting global hunger and combating global warming.

Fittingly, Ms. Robinson's talk incorporated many of these same themes. The Commissioner spoke fluidly on, among other topics, the importance of cooperation and dedication in combating AIDS and poverty, the invaluable benefits of corporate responsibility, and the paramount role of international institutions in guiding the political and economic path of globalization.
