What development strategies are being pursued to bring economic
growth to less developed regions of Africa? What steps has Zambia
taken to cut down on inflation and make Zambia a better choice for
international investors? How is the Zambian government fighting
poverty? How is Zambia fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS and what
have the effects been on Zambian society? What anti-corruption measures
are being used and how are they working? What is the role of Zambia
within the African Union, and the role of the African Union in Africa?
Zambia is one of over 40 countries in Africa, with a population
of over 11 million people. Although rich in mineral resources, less
than 7% of land is currently arable.
Please join the World Affairs Council for a rare opportunity to
hear directly from the current President of Zambia. President Mwanawasa
will address the trade and investment opportunities in Zambia, and
the role of trade in building the Zambian economy.
A lawyer by training, President Mwanawasa began his career in public
service as Solicitor General in the Zambian Government in 1985 but
went back to private practice in 1986. He was later appointed Vice-President
during the administration of President Chiluba but left citing corruption.
President Mwanawasa was elected President of Zambia in 2001 and
took office in 2002. Since that time, President Mwanawasa has been
re-elected for a second term and is working to improve the economic
status of Zambians by fighting corruption and making education universally
available. President Mwanawasa has made anti-corruption and development
the hallmarks of his administration. |
