The
Global Leadership Series brings members of the
Puget Sound community together with senior diplomatic, political
and cultural leaders, including current and former heads of state.
The Series also provides a forum for leading innovators who have
improved – or revolutionized – global perspectives and
practices. The inaugural event in the series, An Evening with the
President of Zambia, was a sold-out success that attracted more
than 700 guests on October 1, 2007. As a part of the Global Leadership
Series, the Council was pleased to present the World Citizen Awards
on March 13, 2008.
The
World Citizen Award recognizes a leader from the
State of Washington who has contributed significantly to public
understanding of international relations and has promoted community
involvement in world affairs as well as local understanding of cultures,
societies, and economies from around the world. The World
Educator Award honors an outstanding teacher who has demonstrated
exceptional dedication to bringing international issues into the
classroom.
This
year, Roy Prosterman, Founder of the Rural Development
Institute, received the World Citizen Award for his pioneering legal
work on land rights in the developing world, and his tireless and
passionate leadership in improving the lives and conditions of the
world’s poor.
Ryan
Hauck, a teacher and chair of the History/Social Sciences
department at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, received the World
Educator Award for his successful development of a sister high school
relationship with a school in Nigeria.
John
Bruton, former Prime Minister of Ireland and current European
Union Ambassador to the United States delivered the keynote address.
Bruton examined the role of leadership in the Irish Peace Process,
and the increasing leadership role of the EU on the global stage.
He also touched on the mplications for global security, peacekeeping,
and economics of the changing EU role in the world and how the EU
is handling the internal pressures of leadership on issues of identity,
social equality, and EU expansion.
