The World Affairs Council Board of Trustees cordially invites you to join us in celebration at the 18th Annual World Citizen Awards Dinner. The Annual World Citizen Award Dinner gathers Council members, representatives, from local and international organizations, civic and business community members, as well as area students and teachers to recognize an individual and an educator who exemplify global citizenship in the Puget Sound community.

The 2005 World Citizen Award will be awarded to Bill Foege, in recognition of his commitment to internationalism through his work in the public health field. His contributions extend from the UW Medical School, to remote missions in Africa, to his leading role in the eradication of smallpox, to the Centers for Disease Control, to the Carter Center and most recently his work in support of bold strategies to reduce and eventually eliminate inequities in health around the world. Bill’s efforts have made a lifesaving difference in millions of families around the world, and have shaped global health practices to make them more efficient and effective.

The 2005 World Educator Award will be awarded to Betty Lau, a remarkable school teacher from Franklin High School, for her exceptional contributions to broaden the global horizons of understanding among students and teachers. Her passion for preparing local students for global citizenship has extended to the creation and seven years management of a world language summer camp offering eight world languages.

The proceeds from this event support the World Affairs Council programs which serve to inform, educate, and engage residents of Puget Sound about international affairs.
