Once the richest economy in South America, Venezuela has gone from oil-rich to cash-poor: One US dollar can fetch over 46,000 bolivars in Venezuela’s black market. A dangerous combination of inflation and violence has given rise to economic and humanitarian crises across the country. With current Venezuelan president and successor of Hugo Chávez, Nicolas Maduro, on the ropes in his own country as well as abroad, the future of Venezuelan politics remains uncertain.

The World Affairs Council welcomes the Chair of Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Washington, José Antonio Lucero, for a conversation on the current state of the country, and what went wrong.
