Donald Trump’s “America First” policy has left European leaders grappling with a United States that appears less committed to the strong transatlantic partnership it created after World War II. The U.S. president has questioned key EU priorities, from NATO to free trade, Russian influence to climate change, and the Iran deal. While European leaders struggle with internal challenges of their own – from independence movements to right-wing populism to the ongoing refugee crisis—they are also confronting the idea of “post-American politics” in Europe. How will European leaders respond to the Trump administration’s European agenda? Join the World Affairs Council for an overview of U.S.-EU relations in the Trump era with Belgian Ambassador to the United States Dirk Wouters, previously the Permanent Representative of Belgium to the European Union from 2011-2016.
