Global Cafe: North Korea
October 3rd, 2017
Global Cafe is a YPIN discussion series where participants get together to examine and analyze some of the biggest global challenges of our day. This month we will discuss recent escalation of activity by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), or North Korea. North Korea’s efforts to develop nuclear weapons have continued since their first reported nuclear test in 2006, despite harsh sanctions and stern warnings from the global community. Recent heated rhetoric combined with new long-range missile testing has intensified an already tenuous situation for the Korean peninsula and beyond. Is North Korea’s quest for nuclear weapons based in the pragmatic desire for survival, or is it priming for aggressive military action? What role do sanctions play in determent, if any? Who is ultimately responsible for ensuring the security of the Korean peninsula?
YPIN, non-YPIN members, and first-timers are all welcome. Before each event, some background materials on the topic will be added to the Facebook page. It’s helpful to read the articles before the discussion, but don’t worry if you haven’t. Part of the discussion is to help each other catch up on the facts.
Please support our hosts at Outlander Brewery & Pub by enjoying some food and beverages during the event!
