In 1940, in the aftermath of one World War and with another beginning, the United States recognized information and ideas can have greater impact than weapons and sought to improve international relations by bringing people of different countries together. The U.S. Department of State formed a Division of Cultural Relations, which launched a program of travel grants for visits to the United States by leaders in various fields from the other American Republics. This program marked the beginning of what would become the International Visitor Leadership Program.
To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of IVLP, Cultural Vistas created a documentary tracing the footsteps of an “Advancing Youth Engagement and Leadership” delegation from Europe. This piece offers a behind-the-scenes look at the multilateral efforts which go into each IVLP project. The World Affairs Council was honored to welcome this group to Seattle and take part in the filming of the first ever IVLP documentary; we invite you to watch and explore citizen diplomacy in action.
