“Responding to Putin’s Russia” – WAC 5/6/2016 Event

On May 6, the World Affairs Council and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation welcomed Dr. Evelyn Farkas, the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia/Ukraine/Eurasia, for a morning event generously hosted by Davis Wright Tremaine LLP. The discussion was moderated by the WAC President & CEO Jacqueline Miller.

The event focused on Russia’s recent domestic and foreign policy actions, and Washington’s policy towards Moscow. The speaker started the event by outlining her thoughts on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s main objectives, which include: staying in power, demonstrating that Russia is a global force, rewriting the rules of the international system, breaking transatlantic cooperation, and protecting their geographic boundaries. The conversation then turned to Moscow’s involvement in Syria and Crimea. Lastly, questions from the audience covered China-Russia  and Russia-Japan relations.
