Meet Our Fellow: Megan Hanna

Why did you apply for/join the Fellows program?

As a member of the World Affairs Council, I had been aware of the Fellows Program for some time. In anticipation of coming changes both domestically and internationally, I was looking for a landing zone to be able to process events, learn and connect with others so I decided to apply for this cohort.

What did you gain from the experience?

I gained valuable insights and perspectives on topics I would not have had otherwise. I came away with a greater awareness of the work going on behind the scenes on some of the world’s most pressing issues, which got me thinking about how I might engage in the future. Having the opportunity to moderate our session with Joseph Torigian of the Hoover Institute was also a personal highlight for me.

What was your favorite aspect of the program or speaker that you heard from and why?

My favorite aspect of the program was the wide range of speakers selected for the monthly meetings. As a fellow you have a unique opportunity to engage in dialogue with key leaders from government, the private sector and non-profit organizations as they provide perspectives on today’s global challenges. A few discussions that stood out for me were on global trends and strategic foresight with Stimson Center CEO Brian Finley and team, US military topics with MG Matthew McFarlane, and space diplomacy with Casey Dreier of the Planetary Society.

What would you say to incoming applicants about the program? Would you encourage people in your field or organization to apply?

I feel like it may be more important than ever to take a step back from digital engagement and connect with others in person to dialogue about issues facing the world today – the Fellow’s Program is a great way to do that. I would recommend the program to those who are looking to engage more deeply in global affairs and meet other professionals from a variety of backgrounds and industries.
