Eradicating Polio: The Road to Zero

We are closer than ever to ending polio. In 1988 there were 350,000 cases of polio in the world and in 2016, only 37. Never before in the history of polio have there been so few children in so few countries with the crippling virus, thanks in large part to a global movement called the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).
The end is in sight. But if we do not succeed, polio will come roaring back. Within ten years, 200,000 children could again be paralyzed all over the world – every single year!
Join the World Affairs Council for a conversation with the Senior Health Advisor and Deputy Director of the global Polio Team at UNICEF Headquarters, Jalaa’ Abdelwahab, to discuss UNICEF’s critical role in using its global presence and equity focus to overcome the obstacles that remain on the road to zero cases.
