Content Club: Discussing Women in Media
March 24th, 2024 6:00PM -8:00PM
What is Content Club? It’s like a book club, but bite-sized...and more fun.
In this new YPIN event series, we’ll organize informal gatherings to discuss everyday topics from a global perspective. We’ll provide content for you to read, watch or listen to before the event (articles, podcasts, videos, TikToks, shows, maybe excerpts from a book or two). Take in as much or as little as you can, bring recommendations of your own, and come ready to discuss. At the end, we’ll provide a collection of your recommendations and thoughts so that you can revisit these resources.
Since this month is Women’s History Month (as well as Oscars month), we will discuss how women are portrayed in the media around the world. Women have historically been underrepresented and oftentimes characterized in demeaning and sexist ways. In Hollywood, there has been a noticeable increase in awareness of gender equality and a push for more diverse and empowering representations of women. However women are still fighting for equal screen time. Similarly, countries in the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, and Asia have their own stereotypes, traditional gender roles, and cultural narratives that they either combat or celebrate (Bollywood, Chinese film, telenovelas in Latin America). How do other countries and cultures differ in how they portray women in the media? Let’s talk about it.
