Join us for a special panel discussion on the future of U.S.-China relations featuring Congressman Adam Smith and Professor David Bachman. As we enter Trump 2.0, U.S.-China relations face new challenges, tensions, and geopolitical shifts. Few are better positioned to speak on these developments than our two panelists. Congressman Smith, Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, is one of the foremost voices in Congress on U.S. national security and defense policy toward China. Professor Bachman, the Henry M. Jackson Professor of International Studies at the University of Washington, is a leading expert on Chinese domestic politics, foreign policy, and U.S.-China relations.
About our Speakers
Congressman Adam Smith represents the Ninth District of Washington State, serving parts of King County including South Seattle, Renton, and Federal Way. Congressman Smith has served in Congress since 1996. His top priorities include creating equal economic opportunity by expanding access to high-quality education and job-training opportunities, and building stronger communities by promoting affordable housing, quality and affordable health care, including mental and behavioral health care, and gun violence prevention. As a senior member of Democratic Leadership in the House, Congressman Smith serves as the Democratic leader of the House Armed Services Committee, where he is a champion for our military members and their families and a long-time advocate of strengthening American diplomacy and development.
David Bachman is an Associate Director of the Jackson School. He was chair of the China Studies Program from 1992-2003 and Associate Director of the Jackson School from 2000-2001 and 2003-2010. His research and teaching interests are Chinese Domestic and Foreign Policy, International Political Economy, Asian Politics, , International Relations, and U.S. – China Relations.
