Turkey and the West: Navigating a Troubled Relationship

With an alliance that dates back to 1952, Turkey and the United States have maintained a seventy-year relationship. However, U.S.-Turkey relations have had their ups and downs. Disagreements in recent years over Syria and Turkish President Recep Erdoğan domestic policies have brought relations to new lows.
Beyond this, Turkey maintains a vital relationship with the EU. Where once there was a real possibility of joining the EU, Turkey now has had it's membership bid all but put on indefinite hiatus over its' repression of media and judicial independence.
