2025 – 2026 EU Democracy and Security Symposium
The European Union Democracy and Security (EUDS) Supplemental Resource Guide is designed to deepen understanding of the historical foundations, contemporary challenges, and future directions of democracy and security in Europe. Developed to accompany the EUDS lecture series, this guide provides educators, students, and lifelong learners with curated resources that expand upon the themes explored by scholars and practitioners throughout the program.
Democracy in Europe is the product of centuries of political evolution. From the democratic experiments of Ancient Greece, the republican institutions of Rome, and Iceland’s early parliamentary traditions to the constitutional transformations of modern European states, the continent has continually reimagined how citizens participate in governance and how power is organized and constrained. These historical developments laid the foundation for modern democratic systems and continue to influence political institutions around the world.
Today, democracy faces both opportunities and challenges. The European Union serves as one of the world's most ambitious experiments in supranational governance, bringing together 27 member states to promote peace, cooperation, prosperity, and shared democratic values. At the same time, European democracies must navigate complex issues such as disinformation, cyber threats, political polarization, migration, climate change, technological transformation, and geopolitical conflict. Understanding these challenges requires examining not only how democratic institutions function, but also how they adapt to changing social, economic, and security realities.
This guide is organized around three lectures and several thematic sections that explore the evolution of democracy, the relationship between democratic governance and security, the development of constitutional systems, and the ongoing balance between national sovereignty and regional cooperation. Resources include articles, videos, lesson plans, reports, podcasts, and primary source documents that encourage critical thinking, historical analysis, and civic engagement.
Through these materials, learners will investigate how democratic institutions emerged, how they have been challenged and strengthened over time, and how European nations and institutions continue working to safeguard democracy in the twenty-first century. By connecting historical perspectives with contemporary issues, the guide aims to foster a deeper understanding of democracy as both a political system and an ongoing civic responsibility.
