2026 EU Policy Forum Educator Workshop: EU Security and Democracy
The European Union Democracy and Security Resource Guide is designed to support educators in exploring the complex relationship between democratic governance, civic participation, and security within the European Union. Developed as a companion to the 2026 EU Policy Forum Educator Workshop, this guide provides a collection of curated resources, lesson materials, and contemporary case studies that examine how the European Union responds to political, social, and security challenges while upholding democratic values.
Organized into five thematic modules, the guide introduces educators to the institutions and decision-making processes that shape the European Union, the security frameworks that protect democratic societies, and the civic practices that strengthen public participation. Participants will investigate pressing issues—including cybersecurity, disinformation, geopolitical conflict, democratic resilience, human rights, media literacy, and youth engagement—through a combination of articles, videos, infographics, lesson plans, and scholarly research.
Throughout the guide, educators are encouraged to draw connections between European and American democratic systems, analyze the challenges facing diverse societies, and consider the role that institutions, communities, and individuals play in safeguarding democracy.
By engaging with these resources, educators will deepen their understanding of global citizenship and equip students with the critical thinking, media literacy, and civic engagement skills necessary to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. This resource guide is intended to foster meaningful dialogue about democracy and security while providing practical tools that educators can adapt for classrooms across grade levels and subject areas. Through comparative analysis and real-world examples, participants will explore how democratic institutions can remain resilient in the face of emerging challenges and how informed, engaged citizens contribute to a more secure and inclusive future.
